MENTORING IS ABOUT PERSONAL GROWTH

Mentors show us how things can be done well. For FREDA DU TOIT, Director at SDT Financial Software Solutions and a Women in IT mentor, mentoring relationships are first and foremost about personal development and growth. Here’s why – and how...

What’s in it for YOU? Recent research suggests that, besides a sense of fulfillment and “giving back”, mentoring can also contribute to living longer and having a healthier life.

In May last year we wrote about “What’s in it for Me? – Developmental mentoring and the mentor”. We ended by saying that one shouldn’t consider mentoring because it makes you feel good. Rather, you should seek out a mentoring relationship that will also allow YOU to walk away enriched.

Give us a work-out … What questions do you think a mentor or mentee is most likely to ask? We’re looking for great suggestions to help build even greater mentoring teams. We’ll post the best ideas on the website – so send us yours now.

• … And win! Everyone who submits a mentoring question or suggestion will go into a lucky draw. The winner will receive a copy of the book Implementing mentoring schemes - A practical guide to successful programs. Sponsored by Clutterbuck & Associates.

Put the “men” back into mentoring… by calling on your male colleagues to join the WIIT mentoring programme today. For more information contact Christeen at christeen@womeninit.co.za

Thank you to everyone who already volunteers their time and effort. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or mentee, or have a mentoring success story to share, please contact Christeen Erwee at christeen@womeninit.co.za

Where are they now?

2007 bursary winner, Nokokanya Sigasa, is currently furthering her studies at the University of Johannesburg. Watch the WIIT website for updates on Nokokanya and our other bursary winners.

Bursary winners 2008
Women in IT has awarded the three Bursaries for 2008 (see below). All three are looking for WIIT mentors, and this is a great opportunity for YOU to share your experience and skill with these promising new entrants into the IT industry. Become a mentor to Chuma, Lebogang or Nomonde by contacting Christeen Erwee on christeen@womeninit.co.za

Chuma Nombewu is an Information Technology student at Tshwane University of Technology, who is passionate about programming. She believes that IT pushes people out of their comfort zones and encourages changes. Here’s why we chose her as a bursary winner.

Lebogang Motlang is a goal-orientated, open-minded B.Com student from the University of Pretoria, who says that work is “not always about the hours you put in, but what you put in the hours”. Read her winning motivation here

Nomonde Malanda, a second-year B.Com student from the University of KwaZulu-Natal describes herself as dedicated and hard-working. She is also determined to rise above her circumstances and eventually become CEO of her own company. Here’s why she captured WIIT’s interest.

Who will have their say …?

We are always on the lookout for great speakers to share their insights, knowledge and wisdom of the world. If you know of anyone who can talk dynamically and authoritatively on a topic that is of interest to our members, please send a short motivation or list of topics to christeen@womeninit.co.za

Women in IT Survey results now out!

IT is an attractive career option for women – but flexible, improved working conditions would make it even more so. So said the majority of respondents in the latest Women in IT Survey, conducted by BMI-T among 275 individuals.

The survey highlighted “technical” and “management” as the areas with the greatest shortage of ICT skills. It also pinpointed unclear future prospects as one of the biggest challenges that participants in development programme currently face.

Click here to find out what the results had to say about skills development challenges, mentoring, and the current state of play for women in IT.

We’d love to do more Special Projects, so tell us what you’d like to see more of!

Send your suggestions to christeen@womeninit.co.za.
