Encourage young women to become active in ICT industry
So said Robynne Erwin, CEO at SmartXchange who was addressing Women in IT members who attended Microsoft’s annual Partner Summit recently.
“With these huge statistics in mind we need to encourage young women to become involved in this exciting industry. We do understand that there are some levels of intervention that are holding back young women, but there are many opportunities out there. The delicate balances of culture and other issues can be addressed.”
She said sharing knowledge and resources and working together to make a difference would stimulate and encourage women to enter the industry.
“A suggestion would be for women to form networks with other women and support each other and form role models for younger women. Sharing experience and solutions is a further form of encouragement.”
Celeste Whitaker, who heads the Women in IT initiative said road shows were currently being planned to schools across the country where learners can be addressed on the opportunities available in the ICT industry.
She appealed to industry for funding to assist in financing ventures such as road shows thereby assisting in reducing the current shortages of skills in the industry.
