In
this edition we hope to inspire you to challenge how young
women in schools are being de-motivated to follow a career
in IT. At the same time, we trust you will challenge yourself
to overcome any obstacles you might face as a woman in
the ICT industry.
Additional training could be the way to go – and
we can help you with this too. In this edition we share
the ISETT SETA Career Guide for 2010, which is filled
with facts on scarce skills and opportunities for developing
them.
We hope that with our support you will be motivated to
find your niche within this very demanding and rapidly
changing industry. |

IT’S
UP TO US: Teachers have the opportunity
and responsibility to nurture the growing minds
in their care – especially when it comes to
encouraging young women to take up studies in science
and technology. So says Angela Serwaa Boateng, Ghanaian
teacher and President of the Tamale based Female
ICT Teachers Association (FICTTA). Hear what she
thinks government, education authorities, and fellow
teachers should be doing to boost the number of
women pursuing careers in IT.

WHY
MENTOR? “Mentoring is about
caring – caring enough to commit just
one hour a week to advise and help guide a
vulnerable young person. None of the forces
claiming our children’s lives are more
powerful than our commitment and love. We
are the solution.” –
Susan L Taylor, National CARES Mentoring

BUILDING YOUR CAREER: It seems that
access to mentoring programs is not as widespread
as is often thought – and yet it is
a valuable way for women to build their careers.
Penny Abbott of Clutterbuck Associates, explains.

ISETT SETA SECTOR
SKILLS PLAN: Over the past few years there
has been a slow but steady decline in the percentage
of learners passing matric. On the upside, however,
a growing proportion of successful matriculants
are qualifying for technical studies at tertiary
institutions. In fact, between 2006 and 2013, the
number of learners writing matric is expected to
increase by about 30%, while the number of learners
opting to follow a career in ICT will increase by
about 35%. These are just some of the trends highlighted
in the Isett Seta Sector Skills Plan 2011-2016.
