WHY DON’T WOMEN support each other more in business?
Is it because we don’t want to, or because we don’t think to ask for it? A writer from the online forum www.theswitchboards.com offers this opinion.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL there’s a way to plan better. Providing for your family in the event of your death should be done sooner rather than later. FNB’s Angelique Visser explains why having a will is so important, and how to go about putting one in place.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A MENTOR (besides access to fabulous networks like WIIT, that is!). Penny Abbott of Clutterbuck and Associates South Africa, provides this easy-to-read summary of what mentees should – and shouldn’t – expect from their mentors.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IN YOUR EXPERIENCE... what our mentors and mentees have to say about their mentoring experiences:
“Mentoring Sindi has been hugely valuable and enjoyable for me. She seems to pick up things really quickly and responds fabulously in terms of introspection to the questions that I have asked. Typical issues that have come up include learning to say “no” the right way, the difference between confrontation and conflict, and prioritising yourself as a brand.” - Eldette Davie, mentor

“Being mentored by Eldette has been a wonderful experience. She is open minded, knowledgeable, experienced, and a walking library. I've been able to learn a lot about myself through our interaction, as well as about business process, ethics and opportunities. I am really enjoying the process. Thank you!” - Sindi Chuma, mentee

“My mentor, Amanda Blom, has made me feel that she has a lot to offer our relationship, and she has read my emails with interest. Unfortunately she is recovering from a bike accident, so we have not yet met. But I have done some tremendous work on my own and hope that I will impress her when she is well enough and available to mentor me again.” - Lerato, mentee

STILL GOING STRONG: This year’s WIIT bursary winners are on top of their game. Here’s how they’re feeling after the first few months of study:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mbali Mdhlalose: “Having this bursary makes it feel as though a weight has been lifted off my shoulders! This third year is going to be tough because I have a very important project to tackle. The work is definitely getting harder, but I’m doing my best to excel while enjoying every moment. I am most interested in the IT project management side of things and my goal is to see myself graduating with flying colours!”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manala Rose: “The last three months have been successful and I am happy to say that I’ve enjoyed the challenges that have come my way. I start my exams soon and I am nervous, but am look forward to them. Being in the field of IT has always been my dream and I am more than happy to be given this opportunity. I seek help from my study leaders and friends when I need it. This year is going well for me, and everything is under control.”

IT PAYS TO BE TOP DOG: Check who the IT top dogs are and how your salary compares, in the 12th annual IT Salary Survey brought to you by CareerWeb and ITWeb, and audited by our survey partner, 21st Century Pay Solutions.

The survey shows that the gender gap remains one of the constants. However, female respondents have reported a median salary that is 26% higher than the previous year, compared to male respondents, whose median is up 20%.
